Get to know the WINNER of the ‘Designers at Debenhams: Catwalk to Collection’ Award at Graduate Fashion Week, in our exclusive interview with Eleanor Rose McMahon…
How did it feel to be crowned the winner of the Catwalk to Collection Award?
“Winning this award is something I’m so grateful for – and something younger me would be dreaming of! It’s been such a whirlwind this year trying to perfect my graduate collection, and to know that people have responded to it in a positive way just makes all the hard work feel worthwhile. I celebrated with my loved ones once I got home who were all so proud!”
Was the win something you were anticipating?
“When I found out I had been selected as the winner, it took a while to sink in! You’re so hopeful for it to be you but you never actually think it could be, so when I found out, honestly, I was completely shocked. My heart was beating out my chest. Once it had set in the next day, I remember waking up and just being filled with excitement for the future.”
What was the inspiration around your final collection?
“The inspiration stems back from a visit to Amsterdam last summer. When walking around the city, I noticed that lots of organic forms had started taking back over the space. They were weaving themselves around the buildings, almost covering them in this pretty, beautiful way – and this started the ball rolling for me.”
“When back in Manchester, I then visited the RHS Bridgewater, collecting lots of visual research, which just confirmed to me that I wanted the whole collection to be centred around bright, floral forms. I knew I wanted the collection to be print-heavy, clashing the idea of organic forms reclaiming space with man’s mess and urbanisation of the world we live in today.”
“I’ve always had a love for floral forms and always end up incorporating them into my work, so it was really exciting and enjoyable to develop a concept I felt so passionate about.”
What are your current favourite fashion trends for A/W24?
“I’m loving seeing the drop-waist puffy skirts and dresses coming in; they are so flattering and I’m hoping to see more styles come out! Also, a statement heel with a pair of tights underneath screams glamour. In terms of prints, I am loving check and tartans – especially with the clashing palettes!”
What's next for you in the fashion industry?
“I’m really looking forward to working with Debenhams on my new line, and to learn from the industry specialists themselves. I hope to be able to grow even more and get to enjoy what I love doing the most. Who knows what the future will hold?!”
Can you hint anything about your upcoming Debenhams' fashion line?
“All I can say is it’s going to be fun, playful and very bright!”
Do you have any advice for those just kickstarting their fashion career?
“My advice is honestly, don’t give up! Keep doing what you love and it will pay off. It’s ok to have moments of doubt but true confidence comes within, so if you believe in yourself, you can and will make it happen!”
